Avenida Rio Branco - VLT - Plein Air Painting

I've always wished to open my easel in the middle of one of the busiest avenues in Rio de Janeiro. Now my dream came true. With the brand new design of Rio Branco Avenue, I can share the space with pedestrians cyclists and the modern VLT.
Plein air painting is an amazing opportunity to witness the urban landscape changing over time.

Sunflowers on my way

We never know what we can find on the sidewalks, mango trees, almond tree, orchids and so many other trees and bushes defying the stone pavement, lending much more beauty to the Wonderful City.
This morning I found this sunflower bed on my way. I could not lose the opportunity of capturing such a feast for the eyes!

Marina da Gloria

Rio de Janeiro is getting ready for the Olympics. Marina da Gloria was completely remodelled for the Nautical games, its amazing, the view is a post card for itself.

The bike easel  sometimes takes me to places that are sometimes impossible to reach by car.Why not join two pleasures and work?

Summer on the Bike Path

High summer, there is an explosion of Flamboyants in bloom all over the city. The fallen flowers turn the bike path into a yellow/red carpet!

Rua Senador Vergueiro

Sometimes we travel far away in search of inspiration when if we look around us we find more than we are looking for. I've been in love with this corner for a long time, it is on my way to the studio. This day the morning light was screaming and I had to paint it!

Ilha Grande - First Impressions

The First Brazilian Landscape Painters meeting was held in Ilha Grande. It was a wonderful paint out weekend! The island is the Garden of Eden, nature is well preserved there.

The first morning I dedicated to trekking, walking around, getting my eyes used to that explosion of color, feeling the mixed smell of flowers, sea, trees...
In the afternoon we had a change of weather, even so I decided to open my pochade box right on the bridge that leads to Black Beach (Praia Preta). I was so excited with all that beauty that I didn´t notice the rain coming. As a result, I had to close everything quickly and go back to the hotel under a tropical storm. Of course I got soaked to the bones! But it was worth.

On the next day  while the island was still sleeping the beach in front of the hotel called me,

lha Grande - Abraão Beach- sandra nunes - oil on panel

Later, I went to Praia Preta (Black Beach) with the group  . What to paint? The amazing beach with its monazitic black  sand or the luxurious forest?
So many options for plein air painting! I went for a backlit scene:

At night it was scheduled a nocturne painting for the group but the light went off in the Island, so we did a very quick painting from a model in front of the hotel taking advantage of their energy  generator. We had  really a very short time so I went for a"oil wash". I regret we didn´t have more time as the model was excellent!

Painting the figure from life in plein air

Sunday, the last day!

Early morning I went to the pier as I wanted to observe the view of the Island from the sea. This one had to be also very quick  as the employees advised me that as soon as the boats started to come I had to leave, because it was dangerous staying where I was standing. Some friends from Sao Paulo took these photos of me from their boats when they where leaving the Island.

I was eager to paint a scene in  Abraão Village, so to finish my adventure in Ilha Grande ...

Worldwide Paint Out

A special day!

some artists in action

Once more we were blessed with a bright sunny morning. It is late winter, Carioca style!
At first , the choice of Leme Beach as a location for this year´s Paint Out seemed at least a crazy idea!
Sunny Sunday morning at any beach in Rio is really crowded.
But it was wonderful! Artists and bathers mixed beautifully: easels, canvases, colorful beach parasols, a real feast for the eyes!
Professional artists, students, amateurs,  from  Rio de Janeiro and neighbor cities  joined us this year to celebrate plein air painting. Some of them traveled  from  even more distant places like Brasilia (more than 1000 km far fom Rio) and Belo Horizonte ( more than 350 km).

                                        Rio de Janeiro 2013

The Worldwide Paint Out  is attracting a lot of attention since we joined it in 2004 with a small group. It represents to me more than a sensorial experience. Coordinating this event in Rio de Janeiro and giving support to other artists who want to do it in their locations, legitimates the concept of Collective in which I believe. It is as if the world were a huge canvas united by the passion for Plein Air Painting.

I´m going to post more photos( I have a lot of them!)  in the Events page soon...

Worldwide Paint Out - Rio de Janeiro 2012

In conjunction with  the 120th anniversary  of Copacabana District celebrations , we decided to meet this year inside of the Fort and be inspired by that amazing view.
Gathering professional and amateur artists from various parts of the city and  other states as well , Rio de Janeiro was appointed again by IPAP - International Plein Air Painters- as city with the highest number of artists gathered for this Pain Out!

Special thanks to our supporters: Brinc'art Stationery, Corfix Paints and Captain Roosevelt who kindly provided all the support needed for our meeting at the Fort be a success once more!

Rio de Janeiro World Heritage

It´s a real treat to be a plein air painter in such a beautiful city! This short video is a selection of pictures taken during the creative process of the painting "Rio de Janeiro Skyline".This time I worked on a oil on canvas dipitch 40 cm x 2.00 m. Working en plein air on these dimensions was a great challenge and, I must say, I loved it!

turn on the sound and watch in HD

Special thanks to Beto Bassoth, a passer by who sent some pictures he took of me.

Studios in Transit - Arte de Portas Abertas 2011

Well, I´m trying to catch up with the last events, I barely had time to unpack from my trip to Europe before I had to set up for this show . The concept this year was bringing to the Cultural Center a bit of each artist´s studio...

The first day :Plein air demo in the garden...
Arte de Portas Abertas exposes Santa Teresa´s cultural melting pot . I had a blast this year, meeting people of all ages...from different countries.. Speaking three( or four?) languages simultaneously is tiresome, but it was a rewarding experience.

With the studio casual atmosphere guests could be in contact wth some art materials and works in progress...

I had a lot of young guests this year......some really very young...
meeting old friends...
New collectors...

Thanks to all who attended, sent me emails or called me by phone. It was nice to meet you at Centro Cultural Laurinda Santos Lobo!

Cine Odeon

Back to Cinelandia, this time I was interested on the beautiful façade of Cine Odeon and the busy square in front of it.
This is one of the most traditional Rio de Janeiro`s movie theatres and it is great to know that it was completelly restored.

Carioca Impressions - Solo Show

Solo Show at Castelinho 38 Gallery

Well, the show came to its end and I´ve been working sending paintings to their new homes. Some happy collectors had already received theirs and others will get them soon. It was a great experience to meet old friends, get to know several silent blog followers and be able to join some names to real faces.
It is amazing the feeling of connection brought by art which links people who otherwise would be perfect strangers.

Some collectors and friends

Some paintings are travelling a long distance...

Castelinho38 gallery was a perfect place for this exhibition, a beautiful archtecture in a quiet street of Santa Teresa and a very friendly staff

You can view some other special moments of the exhibit in the slideshow in the sidebar or here
