Beautiful Urca!

Urca
This neighborhood in Rio is one of my favorite spots to paint. Strolling through its charming streets lined by leafy trees one feels like travelling through time...

Flamboyants and Urca - High Summer

High Summer, Rio de Janeiro is an explosion in color with its Flamboyants in bloom. The architecture bathed by the bright summer light is framed by the golden and red flowers.

Urca - Ramon Franco Street

This is one of my favorite places to paint in Rio de Janeiro - the district of Urca. I love the leafy trees along the streets filtering the harsh summer light!

Worldwide Paint Out - Rio de Janeiro 2016

I arrived early at the meeting point as I knew that later, with the artists arriving it would be very difficult to concentrate on my painting. Corcovado Hill was playing hide and seek with the clouds barely revealing its contours. The artists started to come and little by little the sun made its way through the clouds mirrowing the movement of the artists down here.

That was the moment I wanted to register on my canvas...

I´ve been coordinating this venue in Rio for 12 years, this time I was positively impressed, as we had 75 artists coming from Rio and other cities, some of them traveling more than 500 km to participate. They came from São Paulo, Piracicaba, Paraty etc... We had a great time painting together!

Urca - Nomand Castle

Those who visit my website and blog for some time now, realize that Urca has been quite often one of my inspirations.Strolling through its 17 streets, cycling or walking is part of my daily life. Sometimes with my bike-easel, pochade or large canvas I stop to register these peaceful moments.

2014 Last Brushstrokes?

Maybe...

Summer has just arrived and the temperature in Rio has been around 40c these days. This is not the best season for plein air painting here.
The best time to stay out  is very early morning or late afternoon. This morning I cycled to Urca for a quick sketch. Its tree lined streets are a real invite to paint.

Urca, Autumn Light

The lush colors of the flowers on the facades set an exquisite contrast with the bare tree trunks!

Urca- Clearing Skies

Undefined weather, after a rainy night the sky starts to clear and the dance of the clouds creates a beautiful show on the water. I had to work fast and I hope I did justice in capturing the exquisite winter light.

Plein Air Painting in Urca

Sketching in Urca

I love mornings in Urca. This district in Rio de Janeiro, home of Sugar Loaf Mountain is always very quiet. The charming houses and small buildings shaded by trees is a real oasis.
I´ve decided to work in some small sketches as a counterpoint of a very large painting that is in progress by now.
I aimed to simplify the most I could. I intended to take pictures of the process, but it didn´t work, I took just one of the first washes and then, I forgot to stop...
